26 Aug 2016

  • Dortmund back in Champions League: Group with defending champions Real Madrid
  • Freiburg back in the Bundesliga: Fight against relegation starts
  • Europa League for Mainz: Matches under floodlights in the OPEL ARENA
  • Beat Klopp: Opel MOKKA X up for grabs in online competition with Jürgen Klopp

Rüsselsheim. The wait is finally over. The new football Bundesliga campaign will start with Borussia Dortmund hosting 1. FSV Mainz 05 on August 27 and newly promoted SC Freiburg travelling to Hertha BSC the following day. In addition, Mainz will find out who they will face in the group stage of Europa League later today. Elsewhere, Borussia Dortmund already know who they will be up against in the Champions League – last season’s Bundesliga runners-up will take on defending champions Real Madrid, Sporting Lisbon and Legia Warsaw. Opel and football go back a long way – a tradition that is being continued with sponsoring activities focusing on three Bundesliga clubs this season. In addition, the stadium in Mainz is now officially called OPEL ARENA. Furthermore, Liverpool coach and Opel brand ambassador Jürgen Klopp will continue to proudly drive to the home games at Anfield in his Opel Insignia. The players of Feyenoord will once again take to the field of play with the “Blitz” on their chest and in the UK the four so-called home nations (England, Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales) will be sponsored by Opel sister brand Vauxhall.

Well-known signings for Dortmund

Dortmund’s Champions League campaign will start on September 14 when they travel to Warsaw. Dortmund will welcome defending champions Real Madrid in their first home game of the campaign on September 27. After missing out Europe’s elite competition last season, Borussia are targeting a place in the knockout stage at the least. Coach Thomas Tuchel will make his Champions League debut as a coach. Dortmund made some big signing during the summer with German world cup winners Mario Götze and André Schürrle, German champion Sebastian Rode (from Bayern München), Portuguese European champions Raphael Guerreiro, Spanish international Marc Bartra (from FC Barcelona) and highly rated youngsters Ousame Dembélé and Emre Mor all joining the club. Dortmund will face another club backed by Opel in Mainz 05 in their opening match of the season.

Mainz play in the OPEL ARENA

Mainz 05 will make their first ever appearance in the group stage of the Europa League as of September 15 – marking the biggest success in the history of the club. Managing three competitions will be a challenge for the team around coach Martin Schmidt but manager Rouven Schröder has put a promising squad together that wants to push the big clubs once again. Mainz can also look to a real home advantage in their beautiful OPEL ARENA. The stadium will see its first Bundesliga action of the new season when TSG 1899 Hoffenheim visit on September 11.

Freiburg back in the big time

Olympic silver medalist Nils Petersen will be hoping to continue his scoring run with SC Freiburg in the Bundesliga. Freiburg finished first in the 2. Bundesliga last season and will start the new campaign with a trip to Hertha BSC. The newly promoted side have set themselves the goal of staying clear of the relegation zone but many experts believe that the gifted Freiburg team may be able to finish higher up the table and be the surprise package of the 2016/17 season.

Compete against Jürgen Klopp

Football fans will be able to take on Liverpool coach Jürgen Klopp in a predictor competition organized by bild.de with a brand new Opel MOKKA X up for grabs at the end of the season. Furthermore, two exclusive VIP trips including flight, hotel and ticket for a home game of the “Reds” at Anfield will be awarded at the end of the first half of the season and when the campaign ends. In addition, VIP tickets for the biggest fixtures involving the clubs sponsored by Opel can be won on every match day.
