Opel News - Last race for the European Junior Championship: Marijan Griebel is looking to secure the second spot.

Rüsselsheim. The ADAC Opel Rallye Team has had several intense and exciting weeks recently. The upcoming Barum Czech Rally Zlín marks the third rally in three weeks for the Opel factory drivers Emil Bergkvist (21, Torsåker) and Marijan Griebel (26, Hahnweiler). While the final FIA ERC Junior race of the season will be something of a “freestyle” event for the current European Championship titleholder Bergkvist, who hails from Sweden, and his co-driver Joakim Sjöberg (29, Ösmo), for their German race mate Griebel and his co-driver Stefan Clemens (28, Thailen), the title of Vice European Champion is on the line − and five other drivers with a chance are also hungry for it.

Griebel is headed to this classic asphalt rally in the Czech Republic with loads of self-confidence. He was runner-up here last year. “After two second-place finishes at the 2015 ERC Junior asphalt rallies in Ireland and Belgium, a place on the podium is our goal. Of course we’d love to seize the win that we were robbed of at Ypres because of tire failure during the final special stage. But winning the title of Vice Champion means even more to me. A 1-2 finish in the extremely competitive European Junior Championship would be a dream result for the ADAC Opel Rallye Junior Team, and we want to make that happen. Thanks to the Opel ADAM R2, we are perfectly equipped to do so.”

Bergkvist also believes his team member is a favorite in the finals. “Marijan has proven more than once what an outstanding asphalt driver he is. He will be really tough to beat in the Czech Republic. We’re going to try, of course − and hopefully take points away from the competition to give Mari a hand in his bid for the title of Vice Champion. I personally am really excited to go to Zlín as the European Champion and be able to compete in this awesome rally without the tremendous pressure for points. Though as always, Jocke and I are on the hunt for the best possible finish, which will take nothing short of a perfect performance, as is always the case in the FIA ERC Junior.”

The finals of the European Junior Championship will also include Aleks Zawada from Poland and his French co-driver, Cathy Derousseaux, as well as Julius Tannert from Saxony (25, Zwickau) and his co-driver Jennifer Thielen from Luxembourg. Both pairs are driving a privately used Opel ADAM R2.

The event kicks off on Friday evening (August 28) at 9:15 p.m. with the spectacular city circuit in Zlín (SS1), before the first leg continues on Saturday with eight more special stages beginning at 9:46 a.m. Drivers will finish around 8 p.m., and the second leg will begin on Sunday starting at 8:38 a.m., with the final special stage (SS15) at 2:28 p.m. The TV station Eurosport will report on the Barum Czech Rally Zlín in daily round-ups.
