Holden Debut: New Astra to go on Sale in Australia and New Zealand

18 Oct 2016

  • Down under: Europe’s “Car of the Year 2016” heading to new markets
  • December debut: New Holden Astra to be in showrooms later this year

Opel News - Bestseller heads down under: As of December the Astra is also available as a Holden Astra in Australia and New Zealand

Rüsselsheim. The all-new Astra is aiming to take Australia and New Zealand by storm later this year when it heads down, wearing the famous Holden emblem.

The new Astra is the latest car in the Holden line-up engineered at General Motors’ International Technical Development Center in Rüsselsheim to be introduced to Holden customers in the last two years, following the success of Insignia VXR, Cascada and Astra VXR.

The Opel Astra has been winning over customers in Europe ever since its introduction last year. So far, the compact class bestseller from Rüsselsheim has been ordered over 275,000 times across Europe, in addition to being crowned Europe’s “Car of the Year 2016” on the eve of the 2016 Geneva Motor Show.

Owing to the Australian customers’ love of performance, two lightweight, turbocharged gasoline engines will be available when the new Holden Astra officially goes on sale in December. The first Holden Astra to drive off the production line at the plant in Gliwice, Poland, was equipped with a modern and economical 1.4-liter turbo gasoline engine with 110 kW/150 hp. Customers who enjoy a sportier drive will also have the option of ordering the more powerful 1.6-liter Direct Injection Turbo engine, boasting up to 147kW/200 hp of power and 300 Nm of torque. Both engines will be paired with either a 6-speed automatic or 6-speed manual transmission.

In addition, the Holden Astra will be available with a long list of high-tech features including the adaptive IntelliLux LED® matrix light[1], state-of-the-art infotainment system, Forward Collision Alert1, Lane Keep Assist1 and Automatic Emergency Braking1 to name but a few.

“We have been working with our Australian colleagues throughout the development of the all-new Astra to ensure it will perform exceptionally well in Australia and New Zealand,” explained Peter Christian Küspert, Opel/Vauxhall Vice President Sales & Aftersales.

“We are confident that, with its stylish design, high-tech features and strong performance, Astra will resonate well with Australian customers,” said Küspert.

Küspert’s optimism is fueled by the success of another Rüsselsheim-engineered car in recent months. The Buick Cascada, the first convertible in the brand’s portfolio for 25 years. The all-weather convertible is successfully attracting new U.S. customers to the brand with a conquest rate of above 60 percent.
